Pinterest Grows 150%, Reddit Climbs 83%

The latest polls from research firm Global Web Index (GWI) show Pinterest having a very pleasant 2013 with a growth in membership of 150%.

Whilst still relatively small in Europe with 8% of respondents having accounts, and only 3% of these active, the US figures are impressive with 34% holding accounts and 16% being active.

GWI's figures are showing a healthy year for niche networks,

"Along with platforms such as Reddit, Quora and Bebo, one of biggest winners across the 32 markets surveyed by GWI has been Pinterest, with the content-sharing site recording a 150% increase in global member numbers between Q1 and Q4 2013. An estimated 242.5 million people now have an account – up from 97.7 million at the start of 2013."

Wait? What. Bebo? Well, I never. Can't keep a good social network down and with the ballsy Michael Birch and his wife Xochi at the help, it'd be a mistake to write it off.

Reddit's steady growth shows an impressive 83% growth in 2013 (steady? OK, pretty stellar) with 731m unique users.

However, in a trend that seems at odds with Reddit's foundation of a place to share, often NSFW content, more of their users are staying on the site.

Note: GWI's figures compare their surveys in Q2 2012 and Q4 2013, so cover an 18 month period.
