With an ever-growing list of services like Spotify, mSpot, Omnifone, Pandora, Catch Media, mFlow, Grooveshark and maybe even one day iTunes it's clear: music is moving into the cloud. Is ownership over? How will rightsowners get paid? What are the threats and opportunities for labels, publishers, collecting societies, managers and artists?

The session will include

  • Overview of the various cloud-related business models, including a discussion of the pros and cons of cloud models in an increasingly connected world
  • Business and technological challenges associated with cloud models
  • The role of the cloud in bolstering the development of social music services
  • Navigating the legal minefield associated with cloud/remote storage models

o    Safe harbors under the DMCA and comparable UK/European doctrines

o    Public performance or download: how should cloud models be assessed?

  • Positions taken by record labels, music publishers and collectives: Is there a viable business model?
  • Should users be required to pay for accessing content they already have purchased?
  • What are the equities associated with requiring licenses for cloud models? If services are charging for such models, should content owners share in the revenues?

The seminar will last for approximately 1hr 30 mins and will be followed by a networking session between speakers and attendees. The networking session will take place in the Deloitte atrium, where quality food and drink will be provided for all attendees.

Tickets will be sold for GBP £60 (exc. VAT) per person and £40 (exc. VAT) to paying Music Ally subscribers.
