Flash has gained wide acceptance. Inclusion with NN4.06, 4.5b1, transparent
integration with Windows IE.

>From the W3C site:

" Closed proprietary vector formats are proliferating on the
Web, generally using plug-ins. These formats suffer from
lack of support in content creation tools and lack of
cross-platform support. There is increasing interest
in a useful, interoperable, ubiquitouis, Web-oriented,
open format expressed in XML which would be independent
of any particular renderer or platform.
"

Of course, from the w3c point of view, Flash still has the drawbacks of a
plug-in. But the openness of the format virtually assures that more tools
which create flash will be forthcoming. As for cross platform support - that
is improving, but Flash still is best on Wintel or Macintosh.

HTML 4.0 provides the <OBJECT> tag for including multimedia stuff like this,
and in that sense using flash *is* a standard. It's not as pure as the <H1> or
<P> tag, but it's there.

For further discussion of standards on the web, see http://www.webstandards.org/
