Thanks for your help Adam and everyone. Adam, I think that I had tried
what you described and when I would place that
gradient on the masked layer, even though the one side was at an alpha
of 0%, it still had the sharp edge on it. Would you happen to have some
sort of
example that you have done where this worked that you could point me to?
Thanks again.

Fletch,

Here's my suggestion, which is something that worked for me on a couple
of my projects. Assuming that the bitmap is smaller than the whole movie
(ie, it has empty space around it) you can spoof a mask: Make a
rectangle (or circle, or whatever, your call) in a layer above your
bitmap, and use the gradient tool to fill it in so that it goes from
solid white (or whatever your background color might be) on one end to
completely transparent (alpha = 0%) on the other end. Play around with
the size of the rectangle, and the gradient, until your bitmap can be
hidden under the solid white portion of the rectangle. Then you can
animate this rectangle, making it move over the bitmap in such a way
that it appears to be fading in. I've achieved some nice results with
this.

I know that probably sounded horribly confusing, so please, if you need
me to describe it better, let me know. I think this technique is how
Gabocorp does their opening Welcome paragraph - it looks like they
scroll a blue rectangle down over the text, until it's all revealed.
Could be wrong, though. Be forewarned: this dummy mask technique can
sometimes be obvious on screens at color depths lower than 64k colors...

Let me know if this helps,
AS Norwood
