Did this by accident, but may come in handy for someone.  I "reduced" the stage by accident by not putting a blank keyframe after a mask that was used earlier in the movie.  My objects that were moving "ran behind" the mask that was still on the stage.

I made a mental note so if I ever want to temporarily reduce the stage size, I can use this technique.
