I don't know if there is any way to avoid this. It's just like any other
program, if it doesn't have focus, no input will work. Flash takes this a bit
farther in that you can click on the HTML page that the SWF is embedded in and
give the page focus, but the SWF still won't have focus...then again, that
makes sense since it's handled separately by the plugin and not the browser
itself.

Can a program *pull* itself into focus (without resorting to OS-specific
scripting)?
