Subject: FLASH: False Flash MIME reports
From: John Croteau

Hi all,

There have been some reports lately on the MIME not being set on sites
where it is set correctly.

The MIME is set correctly on Rooney Design.

I think the problem in the false reports has to do with the fact that
the Flash swf file (or any file) has to be loaded in cache before you
can determine a MIME type using the Netscape test.
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/mimetype_check.htm

If the MIME type displays that the File is not cached you must not
assume that the MIME is not set correctly. The MIME type will not be
displayed until the complete file has been loaded into memory. If you
get the File is not cached in the MIME display then check and see if the
file has been completely loaded and recheck when you are sure it is.

Though browsers usually cache all Flash files this is not guaranteed.
Most of the time a Flash swf file is not cached is when the computer is
low on resources (memory). Whatever the cause if the file is not cached
you can not determine if the MIME is set or not by this test. Only if
the MIME type reads incorrectly can you be sure 100% sure that the MIME
is not set correctly. If you get symptoms such as no picture, crashing
browser or unexpected popup boxes is it likely that the MIME MAY be a
problem.
