Although I DO understand the concept of an agent, I don't know how it could
really work in the field of web design. As near as I can tell..... quality
isn't really a concern for most web design firms. Worse yet..... quality
isn't something that most PURCHASERS of web sites can actually spot. You've
got these middle management types with fuzzy ideas on what they want and/or
need (that incidentally compromise most projects).... but they don't have
any background in art and marketing. They look at 10 things and it's
difficult for them to differentiate between bad and average OR average and
excellent.

My point?

There is no overwhelming demand for quality from web design firms and even
if there was the customer can't really spot or understand it. I've been
blown out of the water more than once by companies who charge 5 times as
much and employ people with one tenth my ability. How could this be? They
are FANTASTIC at the sales end of running a web business.

Soooooooo........

How can an agent command huge amounts of cash for his client when what his
client offers isn't really in demand by employers? I mean heck, these
companies can employ goofballs, pay them very little, make huge profits and
nobody on the receiving end minds if they even notice. I'm sure that in
rare circumstances quality is an issue.... but that's really a TINY fraction
of sites. Who gets to do sites like www.topcow.com or
www.warnerchappell.com ? I'd imagine it's the old boys network, not the
agent's network. hehehehe Actually I'm friends with the guy who did
warnerchappell and although he's one of the top 10 most tallented web
designers in America, IMHO he isn't rich. The demand for quality just isn't
there and probably won't be for another...... say 5 years or so.

If somebody on this list uses an agent who is cold-calling design firms
getting them HUGE sums of money I want to hear it. Please prove me wrong on
this one because I'm just about to start using traditional advertising for
Website Partners and that's not cheap, hehe.

Sincerely,

Al Rosetti
