It boggles my mind how popular the "4-to-3" ratio is, as in your
first two examples above. Have y'all ever taken a ruler to your
monitor, measured the actual visible area of a fully expanded
(without losing toolbars etc.) browser window, and done some math?
Long story short, instead of a 4:3 (1.33:1) ratio, it's very close
to 4:2 or 2:1 (actually 1.8:1, on average)! See James L. Mohler's
*Graphics, Animation, and Interactivity with Flash 4*, page 304, for
a great chart (Browser/Version vs. Suggested Design Resolution)
backing up my figures here.
So there ya go, another trade secret revealed on this list. :-)
