Johnee,

There's an example fla of what I think you're looking for on the CD-ROM in the
book "Flash 4! Creative Web Animation" (Chapter 9) called Enhanced Spotlight
Sample. Don't know if its online though ... couldn't find it at Crazy Raven at
least.

Basically it uses one layer functioning as a gradient mask, and on another
layer above, the same shape of the mask, but with a transparent-to-black
gradient applied to the shape.
