Totally possible, and very do-able.  Sounds like the step you may be missing is

making the items buttons (with all the actions) INSIDE of a movie clip. That way

you can have the actions of the button and still name the movie clip so you can

target it when you place the MC into your movie.


This bit of info along with a good _droptarget (and maybe a tell target)

tutorial and you should be all set.  Not too difficult once you get the basics.
