Subject: RE: FLASH: variable sized hit area

Yeah, I thought of this also, but a fixed width font isn't acceptable in the
aesthetic of the site. I don't have any other ideas at the moment. Thanks.

The closest thing I can think of is to use a fixed width font, make your
button the size of one letter and use the length function to find the length
of the name of the song and then make the xscale of the MC that has the
button in it the length*100

Subject: FLASH: variable sized hit area

I'm wondering how to make a variable-size hit area behind a text field of
unknown length.

I'm reading the name of a song from a data base, putting it into a text
field, and putting the text field into a button. (The name will be an
active link to more info about the song.) I'd like to put a solid hit area
in the button behind the entire name of the song. I don't know how long the
name will be ahead of time. I can't figure out how to make the width of the
hit area the same as the width of the title. If I put the hit area into a
movie clip and set its width property based on the number of letters in the
text field, it won't be accurate because letter width's vary. If I put the
text field in a movie clip and grab its width property, it gives me the
width of the entire field set aside for the text.

Any suggestions? TIA.
