Doublecheck the technotes... there are a few ways to check versioning:
a) via JavaScript (but only for browsers which divulge this!)
b) through a branch based on 4.0 features such as expressions or variables
c) through the new "version" property in the 4.02 printing players

This points out how the single word "sniffer" can be used to mean many
different things... AfterShock and Publish enable easy media
substitution... some would prefer to branch to different pages... others
wish for autoinstallation after a sniff... then there are the version
issues to work with... atop that some people want to sniff connection speed
for delivery of alternate content. Lotta sniffing. ;-)
