I don't know about anyone else, but I'd sure like some advice on how to do
that without moving/scaling the objects. Please :)

Look at what I did at: www.retake.com -- Click on contractsheet, look at
the pan & zoom controls I have there for the images. The pan & zoom
controls are manual (under user controls), but they wouldn't need to be set
up that way. If that's what you're talking about and I can help w. advice
or share an .fla, just let me know.
