*JavaScript Goodies* by Joe Burns and Andree Growney. Cheap and the
greatest. Teaches by tearing apart real code. The first half of the
book (30 lessons), in slightly older form, is available free on the
Web: http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/jsp/

Nothing but INTUOS. Even if you hafta get tiny and/or used. The
stroke pen is a juicy treat too. Helpful rationalization: you really
should have *some kinda* 2nd pen anyway, in case you break one. So
subtract regular pen cost from stroke pen cost for Actual
Rationalized Cost of about $35-40.

All I know is that mine is. The pen sets in my mouth when I'm typing,
so it's ultra-handy. If you're squeamish about salvia and such, just
keep the pen holder left and front of the tablet, aimed *toward* the
center of the tablet. Cool tool, and it becomes "transparent" very
quickly. The mouse feels clunky and cumbersome and huge in comparison.

For those who insist upon preferring to draw with a mouse, I suggest
that you then take an old mouse, drill a hole through the center, and
push a pen through the hole, so that you may ALWAYS draw with a
mouse. *Reductio ad absurdum.*

>BTW, I use a Mac G3. OS 8.5.1

Why haven't you upgraded to OS 8.6? It's free, fer gosh' sakes!

And the usual advice: get a second (used) monitor, lotsa RAM (it
seems to be dropping in price! macsales.com), take care of your
System and Hard Drive: see Frederico's
http://sciencequest.org/support/computers/mac/prevent.html .

"In particular, I was musing about where Flash would be in a couple
of years. Right now, it's been delivered to a vast number of
clients, either by being packaged with a browser, or via a download.
Developers are now developing Flash content that is small yet
effective visually. It seems to offer lots of design possibilities.
Will it still be here in 3 years? Adobe, who has deeper pockets than
Macromedia, has announced a Flash competitor. Will Macromedia
survive? Will their vision and focus, so far unsullied [*sic*],
survive?"
