There isn't a particular bit-depth. Fraunhofer encoding works different.
Start with a high-quality source, and then choose your transfer rate.

These techniques use perceptual compression. One way to think of them is
like JPEG compression... you'll get better results with areas of smooth
gradation than with many sharp transitions.
