Subject: | FLASH: Flash 4 bug: MC instance names lost when tweening |
From: | DeJarnett, Gary |

Last Monday, I posted a question to the group about a problem I was having
with an “unfolding” calculator keypad. Each key on the keypad was a named
instance of the same movie clip. The keypad value (1, 2, 3…) was moved to a
text field on the key as it was created. My problem was that I was only
able to alter the value on the first key.
I was about to give up on getting any help on this when Tim Walters of
Glasshouse101.com gave me some suggestions. I still couldn’t get my version
to work, even though I was doing everything he suggested. Finally, sent Tim
my version of the FLA last night and he discovered a bug in Flash 4.
Here’s what he has to say:
You seem to have helped me spot an interesting bug in Flash
4 :)
Because each of the instances is the end result of a Tween,
if the end result is differently named, it seems to lose that name (when
previewing your FLA, goto “Control”, “List Objects”, they’re gives names
“instance1” etc).
Giving the start of the tween an instance name of ins2 ins3
ins4 etc fixes it (the only difference between my file and yours).
Would probably be a good idea for you to post this
information to the list.
I have confirmed that if you name the start of the tween
(the unfolding panel part) the same as the end result, then it works.
The bottom line is that I was only naming the instance of the MC at one end
of the tween, thinking that since it is the same instance, it would keep the
same name. As Tim said, Flash loses the name somewhere along the line.
If you want to check this out, you may download
ftp://206.107.180.51/GaryDJ/calcbad.fla
<ftp://206.107.180.51/GaryDJ/calcbad.fla> for the copy that doesn’t work
and ftp://206.107.180.51/GaryDJ/calcfix.fla
<ftp://206.107.180.51/GaryDJ/calcfix.fla> for the copy that works. As an
aside, does anyone know who “owns” this site. Before I knew the protocol of
creating a folder on the site, I allocated a zero byte file called calc.fla
in the root directory, but don’t have permission to delete it. Also when I
try to clean up the GaryDJ directory, I get a permission denied error.
If anyone knows any place that this bug is documented (as well as other bugs
in Flash 4), I would be interested in hearing where.
Thanks again Tim!
