This has no simple answer. For GET a safe maximum is under 1023
characters, POST is quite different.
The problem with answering this is that it depends on the server
configuration and the browser configuration. Some servers use very
strict limits from fear of denial of service type attacks.
For example for Apache based servers some compile time defaults are :
LimitRequestBody : default 0 (no limit) maximum 2Gb
LimitRequestFields : default 100 maximum 32767 0= no limit
LimitRequestFieldSize : default 8190 maximum 8190 0 = no limit

Hope this helps you, but unless you are doing some very big and complex
queries with lot's of data you should have no problems.
