You could take a look at:
colinmoock.iceinc.com/webdesign/flash/

Read the approaches to launching a window. The examples show different
techniques for communicating between JavaScript and Flash, and the
compatibilities (including IE 3) are listed. Your function will be
different, but the principles are the same...
