Subject: FLASH: MIME is very Important

Hi all,

If you read my Tech Note on MIME you would find out that no browsers,
except MSIE 3/4 Win 95/98/NT, are immune from MIME problems. Netscape
4.04 and all non-ActiveX browsers can and sometimes are affected by the
MIME not being set for Flash. Two different people with the exaxt same
browser version visiting the same site can get different symptoms (one
could get a normal picture and the other no picture at all, for
instance).

I visit a lot of sites and on a day when the MIME not being set
(normally by uninformed newbies) has crashed my browser(s) three times I
am not be as diplomatic as I might outwise be. But a long time Flasher
should know better. Maybe he should realize that if a normal visitor
goes to his site and they see no picture or it crashes their browser
they are very unlikely to let him know even if it is possible. Not only
will people affected by bad Flash MIME avoid that site but will have a
bad taste in general for Flash. So this affects us all.

I'm not trying to mean when I point out the MIME is not set on a site.
This is a basic Web thing all file types have to have their MIME set on
the server not just Flash. Unfortunately Flash is relatively new and not
included in the standard server set-up as are .htm, .txt, .gif and
others. The MIME for Flash generally has to be added manually by the
Website administrator.

If you put Flash on a site you should be sure the MIME is set. No ifs,
ands or buts.
