I haven't been following this thread from the beginning,
so please forgive any excessive stupidity....

Why not just make a small, invisible, draggable MC
to follow the mouse? You could detect the coordinates
of the mouse that way (in Flash 4), if that would help,
but an even better method would be to put an invisible
button in that MC and on 'roll out' or 'drag out', you know
that the pointer has left the SWF (because it can't leave
without rolling out or dragging out).

This method should work in Flash 4 and 5. I've used it
successfully in Flash 5 to experiment with changing the
mouse pointer, but the only thing that is Flash 5-specific
is turning off the visibility of the default pointer.
