Thanks, that is how I ended up going about it, but it made me nervous to
delete the button when it didn't tell me it was unused (I saved a copy).
The question is why does it think the button is used? I'd love to know the
reasoning behind this. Morbid curiousity, I guess.

Let's say you have a button inside a movie clip. Let's say the movie clip
is unused on the stage. However, the button is still "used" in the sense
that it is contained in another symbol, even if it's not "used" on the stage
itself.
