Think you'll have to break the text apart first. Then it should work fine.
Discovered an interesting possibility by experimenting with this. Where you
click is going to be the starting point for the gradient so you have some
flexibility there. What makes it more interesting is that you can go back
into the gradient on subsequent frames and apply the fill in different parts
f the gradient to get a pulse effect. Realize that sounds confusing but
you'll see what I mean if you noodle with it a bit.

Anyone have any idea how I can get a gradient fill in just the text?

I am using names of managers as buttons in a presentation. The Up is just a
white outline of the managers name. The over will be the same with a white
fill, the down I want to use a radial gradient to simulate a depression.
The problem I am having is that I can't get the gradient inside the letters.
The fill box shows gradient, but I still have just the outline. This is all
on top of a black box.

Any ideas?
