You're right - typically users require more bandwidth downstream. Upstream
data tends to consist predominantly of piddling things like HTTP GET
requests. I believe there is a Class Action lawsuit going on in the US right
now of aggrieved consumers who claim that they would have liked to have
known that they were really buying 44.1K modems as opposed to 56K.

While were on the the subject, streaming media players like Real and Windows
Media have 'bandwidth negotiation' - a user-configurable setting that tells
the server what bandwidth connection people have.

Why did browsers never acquire such a thing? Surely it would be useful for
instances such as this? At any rate, if you can get some streaming media
stats on bandwidth it could prove interesting reading.
