UKNM: Free iMacs

Did any one pick up on the free iMacs story? (see

http://www.wired.com/news/print_version/business/story/17863.html?wnpg=all)


Basically you get a free iMac machine if you agree to spend at least $100

per month in a particular online shopping mall for a three year period. In

addition you have to use a specific ISP who charges around $20 per month

connection charge (which is waived if you spend $200 in any month).


While it does not sound that great an offer they reckoned 2,500 had signed

up within 2 hours of it being announced.


It strikes me very similar to the book club type model. You get free or

cheap books upfront if you agree to buy so many books over the following

year. It will be interesting to see what over variations of this particular

type of model emerge.
