UKNM: Image sizes

This has probably been done to death - and it's a question for 'techies' i 

guess - now bear with me - I am NOT a techie...


How is it that some sites have such little download time on images which 

look BIG and other's take longer even though they LOOK smaller? Is it to 

do with gifs?  jpegs? 


I'd really like to be able to 'put my well informed point' across to some 

programmers i am working with at the moment!


Hope some of you 'exSperts' out there can give me some pointers... you
