Hello Andrew,

That's a big, big question. Much depends on:

- how much control you want of your lists
- your priorities for branding
- what technical expertise you have in-house
- bandwidth/servers available
- how much time you have to manage list servers
- marketing priorities - do you need to segment lists?
- do your discussion lists need moderators?
- what tools/access do moderators have?

Unfortunately there isn't a really one size fits all, it depends largely on
what your objectives are. Chinwag has and still does use a variety of
platforms including: Macjordomo, Majordomo and now Lyris. There are many
alternatives, however, particularly if you're looking for a
marketing-specific system. So far, we've found Lyris to be very good,
although it does require a fair bit of knowledge and tinkering to configure
it and keep it running smoothly.

In terms of cash money, it depends on what branding you want. If you're
prepared to sacrifice all, you can go to:

Topica - http://www.topica.com
Egroups - http://www.egroups.com
ListBot - http://www.listbot.com

They all have different pros and cons.

Chinwag has a fair chunk of experience in both email for marketing,
discussion groups and newsletter. Drop me a line off-list if you want to
chat about this further.

Hope this helps.
