Hippo?


Well, its my long term plan to organise my life (for those who've been on

UKNM for years, its the same old idea but on roughly version 47, its 4th

name and numerous changes in design).


In brief Baby Hippo is / will be a personal / group organiser. There's more

than that to it but its the simplest answer I can give.


It is based on a simple premise, your diary, addressbook and gossip

interests are based on a number of different self-contained groups (your

mates from School and University, colleagues at current, previous places of

employment, interest in Nu Media.... along with your partner's mates

from.....). Baby Hippo allows people to create groups, enter information

into them and then merges this information in different ways.


The important bit is that information will only ever need to be entered

once. Regardless of where these people are, provided they are a member of

Baby Hippo we will ensure they see the information. Move job (Baby Hippo

will tell everyone who needs to know), move house (likewise but only to

personal friends), birthday party (ditto), one night stand with the

secretary (possibly if she discusses it).



The other significant thing is that its secure. The system is designed to

only provide access to information you are authorised to see. 15 different

enhancements to Apache's security systems, totalling over 9 months work are

there to ensure that's the case.


However, its not in a finished state yet. Don't go rushing to look, its my

pet project financed out of my own pocket and its only worked on when I'm

not working on other projects. It will be another week or so until the core

of the system is there but as I've been saying that since April don't hold

me to it. However, when its ready you'll be the first to know.


Meanwhile, if anyone wants to help with the design, graphics, explanatory

text (both on the site and in emails), or PR when its ready to go or even

sponsor the lot please contact me. All offers gratefully received. Likewise,

if you want to integrate the addressbook, diary or whatever into your site.

There's definitely no money (and I'm definitely not seeking it) but all help

is gratefully received.


As for the name. Well hippopotamuss(?) wallow in mud and I always thought

that sensible Baby ones would try as hard as possible to ensure that they

had more time to do just that. (either that or it was an available domain

name that everyone can remember). But I'm sticking to the first story.
