What the story says is that of major blue chips listed in the Fortune 500
six of the ten leading web presences are European based. It doesn't say that
Europe has more e-commerce or that the market place is more evolved, only
that Europe's Multinationals are making a better job of it.

Amazon.com and co weren't considered because at the end of the day, despite
their overhyped market values they're small companies who've never made a
profit propped up by venture capital and overpriced IPO's. BT's revenue
dwarfs anything any .com company has come close to.

What this may mean is that the European web business is delivering better
service than its US counterparts. Given the more competitive nature of the
business (people pay per minute they're online so you're competing with
their boredom)Similarly these companies see their US counterparts as their
direct rivals (they don't have domestic competitors in a meaningful sense)
and are typically agressively competing for slices of the American market.
