How about the apocryphal tale of tea coming to North America? At

first, people boiled the leaves, threw away the water and served the

resultant mush with syrup. Yum!

The dumb terminal couldn't be brought into the hospital at first

because although regulations allowed TVs and typewriters, the

jobsworth security guards couldn't cope with the concept of a dumb

terminal. So a cunning hacker told the guard that it was...an electric

typewriter. "See, it plugs into a teevee and it has a keyboard." The

jobsworths could cope with this concept and the bed-ridden hacker got

to login. Huzzah!


And finally, the ship that ran aground at Hull in the 1700's (?) with

no crew save for a monkey. Blighty was at war with the French (as per

usual) and the good people of Hull had never seen a Frenchman and so

naturally assumed that the simian castaway was of Gallic extraction.

The poor blighter was promptly tried and hung. And to this day, I

believe denizens of Hull are taunted over this unfortunate incident.

Aaah!
