Subject: UKNM: Bigger than yahoo?

On the rough subject of search engines is everyone aware of the open
directory project? Being a savy bunch I imagine many of you are but just
incase some arnt.

The open directory project was once called newhoo and now goes under the
very uncatchy title Dmoz (some one needs to take these guys aside and talk
about branding) and can be found at www.dmoz.org. It sits along side the
Mozilla project as, effectively, an open source directory.

The directory is free to use (that is put on your own site) and lists over
a million sites maintained by vonunteers. The result is sometimes mixed but
often sites are far more upto date than Yahoo. Getting listed is also much
easier.

Sites that now feature the open directory include the new look Alta Vista
(nice), Netscapes Netcenter, HotBot (Wired) and Lycos. So the overall
coverage is pretty huge. It also makes more sense than maintaining your
own links page - just sign up and help maintain a collective list.

If you want people to visit it's a good place to start.

Cheers
