The Wrong Social Network: How Cognitive Bias Fools Marketers

chinwag psych 9th may header

This post was written by Mat Morrison, Social Media Strategy Director at Starcom MediaVest Group and originally appeared on his blog. You can find him @mediaczar and his evil alter ego, @evilczar.

Like most other modern human beings (and I’m including you in this), I’m naturally bad at prioritising my life. There are all sorts of psychological processes that — while nicely suited to living in the early hominid moment — aren’t much use when it comes to mid- and long-term planning in the modern world. Wikipedia maintains a handy-dandy list of the resulting cognitive biases that’s worth perusing from time to time.

PsychUp November Speaker update: #FoodPsych & Cognitive Modelling

chinwag psych 9th may header

Moesephine & The Brain by davidd

OK, we admit it. We got a little greedy with not one, but two new speakers who've kindly agreed to come and speak at next week's PsychUp November: Karen Fewell author of upcoming book #FoodPorn and Ian Randolph, Head of Cognitive Modelling at Samos Analytics.

Along with Alex Sass, who'll explore how social phobias can be used in planning digital marketing campaigns, it's going to be a varied session with plenty of food for thought. And drinks. And nibbles. There's still time to grab a ticket.

Introducing Chinwag Psych: Psychology, Neuroscience and Machines that Learn

ChinwagPsych
Big data is big, obviously. It’s huge, in fact with the amount of information pouring out of social networks, ecommerce systems let alone those that run our ‘real lives’ the challenge of figuring out what’s happening is almost insurmountable.

This time last year we started to explore how the worlds of psychology, neuroscience and machine learning could help techno-numpties like me to apply some of this high-fallutin’ brain science to business. From influence to behaviour to understanding emotions, there’s plenty to take on board.

Chinwag Psych was born, bringing together the leaders in this emerging world where academia and business combine in large part powered by digital and social media.
