Simon Says: TfL's Twitter Investment is Awesome

tfl

TfL don’t do a lot right in my eyes. I feel overcharged often and daily moan about the lack of signs alerting tourists to stand on the right. But recently they made a social investment that made me smile. Their homepage proudly proclaimed they were on Twitter.

I wasn't that impressed at the time as I’ve been following TfL for a while, but clicked the link anyway. They now have Twitter accounts for every line. Ahead of the Olympic Games this is going to be useful.

Transport for London Announce Which Stations Get Wifi

tfl map

It's finally here, just in time for the Olympics! Transport for London (TfL) has announced which stations across the Tube and Overground network will be covered by a WiFi service.

Around 80 Tube Stations will benefit from TfL's new partnership with Virgin Media, with WiFi available in ticket halls, corridors and platforms from this summer. We'll finally be able to plan journeys (and replan when services are cancelled & delayed) and access travel news whilst in the station! (Map attached below).

Lessons in Open Metadata

the tube by realSMILEY

The recipe? A large public(ish) organisation (TfL) opens its data kimono to developers. Six days later, a group of geeks gather for a hack-day and a thing of beauty is born, the live tube map.

Have a look. It's rather addictive, like watching the download bar on a browser slowly creep across the screen (just me?). Congratulations to Matthew Somerville (@dracos) for hacking this together so quickly.
