Just place a button on the MC timeline. Double-click the button, assign the
action Stop.

If you want to put the button in the main timeline it is a bit trickier.
Make the button exist the entire timeline (or at least for the duration of
all the movie clips). Double-click every movie clip and give it the same
instance name (in the instance properties dialog box) -- for example, "mc."

Now double-click the button and give it this action:

On MouseRelease [Flash inserts this line automatically]
TellTarget
(Target: /mc)
Stop
End TellTarget
End On

You will of course need a button to stop the pause. Follow the instructions
above but substitute "Play" for "Stop."
