I had an absolutely fabulous bitmap of a tiger's head that I
converted to a vector graphic. It is about 1 Meg as a bitmap and 40K as
a jpeg and 4 Meg as a scalable vector graphic. For high resolution
printing the scalable vector tiger provides absolutely stunning results,
but it's size doesn't make it very practical for the web. If used for
Flash (or the Web) I would convert the vector to a bmp at the size
needed and crop it to the minimum size needed, then import into Flash
(or an appropriate program to convert to jpg).
The point is that some images are better as vectors and some as
bitmaps (converted to jpeg inside Flash) depending on the particular
image. Images that are more like diagrams or cartoons are more likely to
be better as vector art, whereas images with a lot of fine details such
as portraits might do better as raster images (Bitmaps).
The smallest sizes are usually vector images that were created (or
recreated) inside Flash.
