Here's how I'd do it "the quick way":-

Step one: create your motion path - and a "dot" to travle along it.

Step two: Copy the motion path onto a new layer - set the line size to a
size roughly 3/4 that of the dot (or whatever makes you happy) - then
convert it to a fill (convert lines to fills - modify - curves menu)

Step three: Convert your new layer into a mask - then under the mask tween a
gradient to sweep across the screen at the same rate as the dot - (you may
need to set keframes at each point on the path), with the dot at the
leading edge.

Your gradient will then mimic the residue left on the phospor on a real
cardio whatsit machine (I'd set it up transperent through to bright green I

I hope that's clear - It may not yield the best results (I've not tried it
yet) but it's certainly quicker the onion skinning - or duplicating MC's
(although that would be my preferable method).
