Don't optimize them before-hand. I've found that the best-looking images are
imported as bitmaps. Experiment with different JPG quality settings when you
export the movie.
I'm struggling with the same problem of having to use a lot of imported
bitmaps. If there's any way you can cut down on the number and size of your
bitmaps, you will have a much smaller movie! I've recreated some parts of my
bitmaps as vectors.
