Subject: FLASH: Detection
From: Derek Goodwin

Hello

I am new to this list, and I am sure this is an old question. Could
anybody point me to a foolproof system of detecting the flash plugin in
different versions of Netscape, IE and AOL.

I tried making small movie in Flash that sends people to an animated
page, and placing <meta> tags in the head of the HTML document to
redirect viewers who don't have the plugin. This works great on
everything but Windows IE 4 w/o the plugin, which uses the first Flash
movie's forwarding action to go to the main Flash Page, but then doesn't
play that one. I saved both movies in Flash 3 format from Flash 4.

I haven't been able to test IE 5 w/o the plugin. If anyone wants to look
at my test files, including the original Flash (fla) documents, they are
at:

http://www.tortus-tek.com/flash_detection/

detect.htm is the detection file.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Derek Goodwin
