I'm not sure I'm understanding what the problem is....
you should be able to make anything a button by selecting it, pressing f8,
and choosing "button". If the object in question is already a symbol, press
command + I, and you'll get the object information dialog box. In there, you
can make that instance of the symbol a button if you want. Then, by
option-clicking on the button, you'll go into edit mode, and can edit the
button as you like.
