Yes, you can have a button inside a MC and have it tell target to
another MC.

Wait a sec. You MC and the button inside it both have the *same*
instance name? That's a no-no. They must have different names.
You then tell target to your other MC by returning referencing the
main timeline (using "/" as the prefix on your tell target command,
followed my the instance name of the movie you wish to control).

To recap. You have MC1 which contains Button1. MC1 is on the
main timeline and has instance name "mymovie" let's say. Button1
is inside MC1 and has instance name "mybutton". You also have
MC2 on the main timeline with instance name "mytransition". The
action applied to "mybutton" should be a tell target to "/mytransition"
(ie, the MC "mytransition" which is sitting on the main timeline... )

Am I reading your message correctly?
