Subject: FLASH: egg cracking animation - symbols disappear at end

I'm having a hard time understanding this:

I'm trying to create an animation of an egg cracking open. A crack made up
of short lines gradually spreads across the egg. Each addition to the
crack is a symbol on a separate layer. This works OK. Finally, I want the
two sides of the egg to fall apart, so I've traced 2 outlines of the 2
halves of the egg. So at this point I want all the short lines I drew
earlier for the cracks to disappear. But when I create a keyframe in a new
layer and select and cut all the short crack lines, all the short lines are
removed further back along the timeline leaving a series of empty
keyframes.

This has got to be a simple mistake I am making.

Thanks for any advice
