If this is an audio CD, the file is already an AIF. Just open the disk,
find the master file, and open it in QuickTime. From there, you can edit
out the portion you want (highlight and select, then copy) to a new
document (paste). Do a 'Save As', and you have your snippet.

If this is not an AIF-native file, you can still likely open it in QT to
edit, depending on format.

If you can't figure out how to open it in QT, you can use SimpleSound (in
your Apple Menu) to record a snippet (hint: allocate more memory to
SimpleSound to increase your max time) by selecting the sounds source
(from your Monitors and Sound CP) as either 'CD' or 'Internal'. Once you
have the sound in SS, you can again use QT to convert it to AIF (note: SS
saves the file in SND format inside your System Suitcase. Be sure to drag
it out of the Suitcase when you're done, unless you want to retain it as
a System Alert sound).

There are numerous freeware and shareware apps that give you more power
and flexiblity to extract and edit sounds, but the freebies right on the
Mac usually do just fine.

And, as always, please don't forget to respect copyright laws when using
other people's work.
