russ,

yes, i tried to use settings from the text palette and i put it in a MC and tried to adjust the alpha settings on the MC. this didn't work, hence the question. in your answerl, you said it worked for you, did you do anything special? thanks.

Yes, it works; just did a 1 minute attempt at it and it worked just fine.
