I'm afraid the "GIF" checkbox in the publish settings has NOTHING to do with
using GIIF compression INSIDE the Flash movie itself (it is only for
creating an alternate GIF to display if people don't have the Flash
plug-in).

Flash uses JPEG compression on ALL bitmaps by default. To override this for
bitmaps that would benefit more from GIF compression do the following:

1) In the Library, double-click on the bitmap you are concerned with.
2) Change the "Compression" setting from "Photo (JPEG)" to "Lossless
(PNG/GIF)".

You will have to repeat the above steps for every image separately.
