yes they can read the original PNG format ( I think already IE 3 can )
but I am not sure if there are any non MM apps that can read Firework PNGs
with several layers and vector shapes and all that

to answer Thorwalds q : I never used PNGs in HTML, and I've rarely noticed
s.o else does, but I think ( dependent on your target audience ) it's no bad
idea to do so
