that's exactly how you could do it. set up a routine that constantly loops
and checks the duration between clicks. reset the counter after a preset
time-out period, like a second, or if the mouse has moved off target. once
the condition is true you can set a flag and havwe other running routines
checking for that flag.

It's possible using 'getTimer' to check the duration between clicks.
Double-clicks are not supported better because they aren't universal
as a means of interaction on all platforms. That was the status with
Flash 4 anyway...I'm not deep enough into 5 yet to be very helpful
there, but I'd bet it's the same.
