Here's the ongoing tracking of this issue:

This is part of "The PNG Home Site", and contains much information on
history, technology, application support, more. PNG was the very first
actual Recommendation from the W3C back in 1996, and is also in the process
of becoming an actual ISO Standard. Getting practical implementation of a
finished Recommendation or even a Standard is a different thing, though.
