>> there's also a fairly comprehensive tutorial that comes with flash - and
you can download flash free off the macromedia site free for 30 days, which
should be enough time to get the basics down pat. <<

i've been using flash for almost a month now and that's exactly how i
learned...did the tutorial that i downloaded along with the trial version.
that gave me a great overview of the program and how to use it's interface.
that was enough to convince me that i *needed* flash! <g>

after that i bought hillman curtis' "flash web design" which is, by far, the
best book i've seen on design using flash. there are only about, oh, 8
tutorials i think. but these are *real* projects that curtis and his team
have designed. he gives great background on the work and how the design
came to be. there are so few books on flash, photoshop, illustrator, etc.
that really give you a look inside the designer's head that i always snap
one up when i see it. i haven't been disappointed in this one. and curtis
is a rather entertaining writer, too. this is not your typical "dry"
technical manual.

caveat: it's pretty pricey with no cd-rom -- $45. i lucked out and found
one during a borders sale for 20% off that price.

i've also purchased Flash 5 Visual Quick Start Guide. i use this as a
reference when i'm looking up something specific. i have to say that the
manual that came with the software isn't nearly as good as this book.

hope these suggestions help!
