Thanks for your note, Marc. I had already tried this idea - no dice.

I found the culprit a couple minutes later - I had forgotten that Flash
4 on the PC has problems with Postscript fonts - in the past I had
experienced crashes when attempting to convert a word of text
written in a Postscript font to a symbol - crashed every time.

I was working on graphic elements and MC's for this file, and created
a new layer for some text. I used a Postscript font (Adobe Garamond
SC) and for some reason the conversion to symbols worked. The
crashes came right afterwards, but I had forgotten about the problem
with PS fonts.

I ended up just making little GIFs in Fireworks and importing those
into Flash - end of problem. I will probably make a couple of font
conversions in Fontographer to speed things up.
