if you want to go for number 1 i'd say the javascript bible is your best bet
(danny goodman, idg books).
it's both a well written tutorial and an extensive reference.
(no, i'm not getting paid for this)
if your interest is triggered by the new possibilities in flash 5, i suppose
there must be books that are more on topic. you can download a reference at
macromedia.com for one.
